What is it like to live in Dahlonega?

The town the other fifty-one weekends of the year, and what to look at if the festival has you thinking about staying.

The short answer

Dahlonega is a small mountain town about sixty-five miles north of Atlanta, the seat of Lumpkin County and home to the University of North Georgia. Life centers on a brick public square with an 1836 courthouse in the middle, with wineries, waterfalls and mountain roads a short drive out. Gold Peach Realty, which publishes this guide, lists homes here.

The town without the booths

Come back on an ordinary Tuesday and the square is a place where you can park. The courthouse in the middle is a museum. The storefronts around it are shops and restaurants.

The New Georgia Encyclopedia describes Dahlonega as the seat of Lumpkin County, about sixty-five miles north of Atlanta in the Blue Ridge. The university is one of the largest local employers and, in the encyclopedia’s words, plays a major role in the community.

The visitors bureau counts wineries, waterfalls, scenic drives and gold mining among the things to do nearby, and the calendar is full: an arts and wine festival in May, a mountain music festival in spring, and Christmas on the square.

Questions worth asking before you look

  • How close to the square do you want to be? Walkable to downtown and ten minutes out are very different days.
  • Do you want land, a neighborhood, or a place in town?
  • Is this a home, a second home, or somewhere to retire to?
  • How do you feel about a festival closing downtown to cars a few weekends a year?
